From Stability to Chaos began as the lecture notes for Chaotic Processes (AP 3011 G), a course at Delft University of Technology. Harmen J. Jonker led the course, and the two authors developed it together while Maarten van Reeuwijk was a PhD student working on turbulent convection in Harmen's group in the physics department.
From the outset the course was built around the idea of learning by doing. Each week the students would work through one exercise in the computer lab, building hands-on intuition for this rich and often surprising field. The exercises gathered in this book are therefore central to it, not an afterthought — they are how the subject is meant to be learned.
We had long intended to turn the notes into a book. It has taken us nearly twenty years to reach this point, and we are delighted that it is finally available.

Harmen J. Jonker is Professor of Atmospheric Physics in the Department of Geoscience and Remote Sensing at Delft University of Technology. He co-founded Whiffle, where he is Chief Innovation Officer. His research focuses on turbulence, atmospheric boundary-layer physics and large-eddy simulation, with applications to weather and wind energy. |

Maarten van Reeuwijk is Professor of Urban Fluid Mechanics in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Imperial College London. His research centres on turbulent transport and buoyancy-driven flows — from jets and plumes to environmental and urban fluid mechanics. |
